How to make an articulated head for an amigurumi.
El Pony TejedorLearn how to join the head and body of an amigurumi safely and cleanly, creating an articulated head so that the doll is securely attached but still has mobility.
WHAT IS AN ARTICULATED HEAD?
An articulated head is one that is not rigidly sewn to the body, allowing it to move slightly from side to side or forward and backward. This method adds more expressiveness to the amigurumi and significantly improves the final result.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO ASSEMBLE THE HEAD PROPERLY?
Proper assembly prevents the head from becoming crooked, moving excessively, or sagging with use. Furthermore, correct assembly makes a significant difference in the final appearance of the doll.
Before we begin
- Before joining the head and body, you need to crochet a few extra rounds on both pieces to form the neck. For example, you can crochet 7 extra rounds of 12 single crochet stitches on each piece and close them with an inverted magic ring. (You can find instructions here on how to make an inverted magic ring.)
- As for the stuffing, these extra rounds in the head will not be stuffed. Using a stick or the crochet hook itself, the neck will be inserted into the head. In the body, the neck will be stuffed and left as it has been crocheted.
- Finally, it's important to leave a long strand in both.
pieces to be able to make the joint correctly.

HOW TO JOIN THE HEAD AND BODY SO THAT IT IS ARTICULATED
- Using a needle, we will insert the long strand that we have left in the head through the inner hole and bring it out right through the center of the magic ring.
- Next, we will bring out the long strand that we have left in the body through the head, inserting the needle through the hole at the bottom of the head and bringing it out through the stitch next to the previous one.
- Once both strands are protruding from the top of the head, adjust them to join the head and body, tie a couple of knots, and hide the excess threads. This way, the head and body will be securely attached, but the head will still be able to move.
